Ohlone peoples lived in the San Francisco area for hundreds of years before the Spanish settled in the late 18 th century. Along with the rest of California, the San Francisco area came until Mexican control in 1821, then under American control in 1848. The California Gold Rush transformed the economy of San Francisco and drastically boosted the population. San Francisco was devastated by an earthquake in 1906, but bounced back to become one of the most prosperous cities in the country.

Today, San Francisco is home to more than 830,000 people, making it the fourth largest city in California. It's also the second most densely populated city in the country, just after New York City. San Francisco is famous for the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and for its dynamic Chinatown area. Millions of tourists come to San Francisco every year to ride the trollies, visit Alcatraz Island, and sample the delicious food.
