  • Crafty Ideas to use Fabric Already at your Home: Make Fleece Blanket from Scraps

Can’t to the fabric store now? Need a comfort project? Make a fleece blanket from scraps! Here are the step by step directions to keep your fingers busy and spread some love (and warmth)!

    1. Cut the fleece into 16 10 x 10 inch squares. You can make them any size you want, you’ll just end up with a different size blanket or need to cut more or less squares. This makes a blanket that would be a good size for a baby or toddler. Just cut more if you want it to be bigger. Lay the squares out in an arrangement that looks nice.
    2. If you don’t have any pieces that are big enough for a backing, overlap the pieces about 1/2-inch and zig-zag stitch down the middle. Keep reading to see what I mean.
    3. Start by pinning and sewing each of the rows together first.
    4. Overlap in a pattern so that one square is on the bottom, and the next square was on top. No need to measure, hust try to be consistent and overlap about 1/2-inch each time.
    5. After all of the rows are done, you can pin and sew the rows to each other.
    6. Make sure that the seams from all of the squares line up with each other. The nice thing about the fleece being stretchy is that you can make the seams line up by giving the fabric a little tug before pinning. Again, just a zig-zag stitch here, and I used the same pattern of overlapping that I did with the squares.
    7. When all of the rows are sewn together, you’ve got your blanket. The edges seemed to be lacking something, so I went around the outside with this curvy, decorative stitch. You could also put some kind of binding on it. Fleece doesn’t fray, so you could just leave it as-is if you want.

  • Crafty Ideas to use Fabric Already at your Home: Make No Sew “Paper Towels”

Right now, seems like becoming self sufficient and resourceful is more important than ever. Here is a way to eliminate buying paper towels while using fabric remnants you have in abundance in your house! Sharing an idea by Sara McFall, owner and founder of My Merry Messy Life. Here is her website for more good ideas: MyMerryMessLife.com

    1. Start by rolling one cloth from one short end to the other. Then take each subsequent cloth and roll them the same way, but on top of the previously rolled ones. Here is a picture of the second cloth being rolled on top of the first.
    2. Then, insert the one huge roll into the oatmeal container and you can pull out the towels one at a time!
    3. Keep a small trash can in the kitchen where I throw all our cloth products and wash them about once a week – rags, napkins and towels. It is important for the towels and rags to dry before throwing them in the trash, otherwise mildew will set in and it is nearly impossible to get out!

  • How to Care for Silk Fabric

how to care for silk fabric san francisco

Silk is a great option for bridal fabrics and other luxury fabric needs, and can often be found at a fabric outlet. If you’ve recently purchased silk fabric at a fabric store in Berkeley , you should make sure that you know the proper way to care for it. When silk fabric is well cared for, it will stay beautiful for a long time. Avoid exposing your silk fabric to perfumes, deodorant, or bleach, as they can stain your silk fabric.

Silk fabric should be protected from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. When ironing silk fabric, only iron the backside of the fabric, and do not spray the silk with water. The iron should be set at a low temperature, and should preferably be on the silk fabric setting, if the iron has one.

You do not have to dry clean silk fabric, but you should take care when washing it. Do not use water to treat stains on silk. You can clean silk fabric by soaking it in warm water with a mild soap for no more than five minutes. Do not wring the fabric dry when removing it from the water. Instead, wrap it in a dry towel to remove excess water, and then lay it on a flat surface to air dry.

  • Choosing the Right Style of Wedding Dress

choosing the right style of wedding dress san francisco With so many options for wedding dresses, it’s easy to find one that will make you feel comfortable, happy, and beautiful on your big day. If you’re having a wedding dress custom designed and created for you, or if you’re sewing your own wedding dress, you should visit a fabric store in San Francisco for wedding fabric. However, before you pick out your bridal fabric, check out this helpful guide to choosing the right wedding dress style.

    Consider Your Own Personal Style

The best way to make sure that you feel comfortable and gorgeous in your wedding dress is to stay true to your own personal style. If you rarely wear dresses and prefer a more casual style, you may feel awkward and uncomfortable in a ballroom-style wedding dress. Conversely, if you enjoy dressing up, you’ll relish indulging your glamorous side. You can also choose wedding fabric according to your personal tastes, regardless of whether it would be considered traditional or more alternative bridal fabric.

    Avoid Experimenting

Even if you start designing your wedding dress as soon as possible, it still isn’t a great idea to experiment with a style you’ve never worn before. If you want to get a sense for what wedding gown styles work best for you before you or your seamstress starts sewing, go to a store and try on different wedding gown styles. You can even have a friend take pictures of you in different styles of dresses so you’ll have them for reference when you design your dress and visit your local discount fabric store.

    Aim for Comfort

You’re going to be in your wedding dress for a number of hours, and much of that time will be spent standing, sitting, and dancing. You’ll want a dress that is comfortable enough to wear for a long period of time, and isn’t too much of a hassle to maneuver when you’re walking, dancing, or need a bathroom break. You should also aim for comfort when choosing wedding fabric for your dress, and avoid fabrics that are overly warm or itchy.
